A white kaudi , also known as Cowrie or kawdi is a marine mollusc which has a glossy, brightly patterned domed shell with a long, narrow opening. The kaudi was the shell most widely used worldwide as shell money. It is most abundant in the Indian Ocean and was collected in the Maldives and in Sri Lanka and on other Indian islands. The shells of kaudi are usually smooth and shiny and more or less egg-shaped, with a flat under the surface which shows a long, narrow, slit-like opening, which is often toothed at the edges.

White kaudi shells are also worn as jewelry or otherwise used as ornaments or charms. They are viewed as symbols of womanhood, fertility, birth and wealth. kaudi or Cowries are naturally formed shells that are considered rare and sacred.
